Images of George Street and Bank Street,
Ashford, Kent
The first map shows the location of 28 Bank Street Ashford c. 1871/2. As
now established a
William Tanton is listed as a gunmaker at this address in the late 1870's. W. R.
Leeson’s is later confirmed by Trade Journals as residing at 28
Bank Street. Around 1880 Bank Street was extended and absorbed the
former George Street. At this time Leeson's old George Street premises
and home was renamed Bank Street and renumbered from 28 to 38. In the
1881 census, W. R. Leeson and his family are confirmed as living at 38
Bank Street, Ashford. hence the apparent business re-location that was
in bought about by street renaming, a common practice in Victoria times
I understand in an attempt to simplify street layouts and naming.
